What is Mattress Firmness?

The firmness level of a mattress indicates how firm or soft the sleeping surface is. It determines how deeply your body sinks into the mattress and how much support you receive.

The designations range from H1 (very soft) to H5 (very firm). The right firmness level ensures that your spine remains in a natural position -- this is the foundation for restful sleep.

Important: Firmness ratings are not standardised. An H3 from manufacturer A can feel different from an H3 from manufacturer B. That is why trying out mattresses in person is so important.

Firmness Levels H1-H5 Overview

H1 -- Very Soft

For lighter people up to approx. 60 kg. The mattress gives way considerably and envelops the body. Ideal for children and petite adults.

H2 -- Soft to Medium-Firm

For people between 60-80 kg. Offers a good balance of comfort and support. Particularly popular with side sleepers.

H3 -- Medium-Firm (Standard)

The most frequently chosen firmness level. Suitable for people between 80-100 kg. Provides good support for most sleep types.

H4 -- Firm

For people between 100-130 kg. Less sinking depth, more resistance. Good for stomach sleepers and people with back problems.

H5 -- Very Firm

For heavier people over 130 kg. Maximum support, minimal sinking. Prevents the mattress from being "slept through".

Firmness Table by Body Weight

Firmness Body Weight Feel Recommendation
H1 up to 60 kg Very soft Children, very light adults
H2 60 - 80 kg Soft to medium-firm Light adults, side sleepers
H3 80 - 100 kg Medium-firm Average adults (bestseller)
H4 100 - 130 kg Firm Heavier people, stomach sleepers
H5 over 130 kg Very firm Very heavy people

Firmness by Sleeping Position

Side Sleepers

As a side sleeper, you should choose one firmness level softer than the table recommends. The reason: the shoulder and hip need to sink into the mattress so that the spine stays straight. Example: at 85 kg, prefer H2 rather than H3.

Back Sleepers

Back sleepers are usually well served with the standard firmness by weight. The body needs even support along the entire spine.

Stomach Sleepers

Stomach sleepers need a firmer mattress to prevent sagging in the pelvic area. Choose one firmness level firmer than recommended.

5 Tips for Choosing the Right Firmness

  1. Trying is essential: Tables provide guidance, but nothing replaces personal testing. In our showroom in Detmold, you can try different firmness levels.
  2. Consider your partner: With different body weights, we recommend two separate mattresses with a topper on top.
  3. When in doubt, go softer: If a mattress is too firm, you can improve it with a soft topper. The reverse is more difficult.
  4. Consider your health: For disc problems or back pain, you should seek professional advice.
  5. Adjustment period: Give a new mattress 2-4 weeks. Your body needs to adapt.

Frequently Asked Questions About Mattress Firmness

There is no one-size-fits-all recommendation for back pain. The key is that your spine lies in a neutral position. A medium-firm mattress (H3) often helps, but it depends on the type of complaints. Seek professional advice.

Yes, to a limited extent. A soft topper can make a too-firm mattress more comfortable. However, a too-soft mattress can hardly be made firmer with a topper. When in doubt, buy one level firmer.

At 100 kg body weight, you are between H3 and H4. The final choice depends on your sleeping position: side sleepers tend towards H3, stomach and back sleepers towards H4. Best advice: try them out!
